There’s no one way to write a gratitude journal: this nostalgic practice can help you heal, self-reflect, improve your mental state of being, and become more efficient and productive in your work life too – the most important part is to begin. Here are some prompts to get you started.

Before you begin

Keep in mind that when writing with mindfulness, it helps to be specific. Recalling things in more detail can help make past events feel more intimate and special to you. There also isn't one perfect way to write your journal: try rhyming or poetry if that keeps your ideas flowing, keep things casual with a simple bullet list on your busier days, or try drawing and sketching out your thoughts for a fresh daily dose of creative release. Why not also develop your visual thinking by using stickers, washi tape, polaroid photos, or other textural elements to add more creative flair and substance to your journal. The more inspiring your journal becomes to you, the more likely you'll go back to revisit your entries – beneficial to tracking your progress.

Keeping track of your feelings

After writing an entry, give yourself time to reflect on them too. Writing your thoughts doesn't always mean you've let them go – it can simply mean that you've acknowledged them. So self-reflection is a vital part of the process: it gives you the capability to heal and process information. It's also perfectly okay to revisit past journal entries too: diving back into past events and memories, coming to terms with how you feel about them now compared with before, will help you track your progress. No matter where your journaling takes you, always treat yourself with thankful kindness. ✺
